Create a game in 48 hours!

Global Game Jam Antwerp is returning for the 17th time!

Global Game Jam is a worldwide event taking place every year in January where the creation of games is celebrated.
Antwerp is one of the many locations all over the globe where jammers will gather. There will also be locations in Ghent and Brussels!

Each edition there is a secret theme that will be revealed at the start of the event. We provide you with a location, food and a separate sleeping area so you can work your magic during these intense 48 hours.

Even if you have never developed a game you can still participate at this event. We welcome all people with all kinds of skills. If youโ€™re a musician, developer, writer, artist or are simply interested in creating games, donโ€™t hesitate and join!

Generative AI policy

One of the many beauties of game jams is connecting and collaborating with other humans. Another beauty of game jams is diving into learning new things and learning from each other. While the commercial use of GenAI is relatively common these days, and it might enable a team to produce a bigger game in a short amount of time, it obstructs the values of game jams that we wish to uphold. Any help that GenAI might be able to offer you is better sought from your teammates and fellow participants.
This is why we have decided to prohibit the use of GenAI at our jam site.

Algorithms and technology which were commonly available before 2020 (such as speech recognision, computer vision and photogrammetry) are still allowed to be freely used.

FAQ

Nope!
A game jam is a great place to create your very first game.
Since you'll be working with others, you'll learn a lot from each other and you don't need to know everything beforehand. While prior game-making experience isn't required, it's helpful if you have some creative skillsโ€”such as art, writing, programming, music, or design.

We expect around 40 participants for this edition, which typically results in roughly 10 teams.

There's no strict minimum or maximum.
Teams of about 2 to 6 people tend to work best.

Nope!
The jam begins with open brainstorming sessions where everyone works together without fixed groups. After these sessions, any participant can pitch an idea for a game. And based on these pitches, you can form teams with other participants around the ideas you're most excited about.

Kind of?!
We encourage participants to mingle and collaborate with new people.

While we do recommend mixing with others, you're still free to team up with your friends during the teamforming phase.

You may re-use previously made assets or code to create something new and genuine. Public asset libraries are fine too, provided the licenses allow it. Just make sure everything you use is credited properly.

Yes!
Although it's less common, you're absolutely welcome to create a board game. If you can convince others to join your idea, we fully encourage it!

Although it's less common, you're absolutely welcome to create an alternative controller game. If you can convince others to join your idea, we fully encourage it. However we don't foresee any materials or equipment to support you, so come prepared.

The location is accessible 24 hours a day.
However, we're all human, and sleep is important. Healthy habits matter. If you're a night owl and prefer working late, youโ€™re welcome to do so. Just make sure you respect your own boundaries.

We do our best to keep an eye on things, including during the night. We've never had any incidents of theft or other issues at previous jams. However, you are ultimately responsible for your own belongings.

Throughout the event we'll be providing healthy vegetarian meals, so no meat options.
Each day we'll have a shared dinner moment, a chance for everyone to reset and reconnect. We'll announce the menu on-site. We do take your food restrictions into account.

If you prefer to bring some of your own food or snacks, that's totally fine as well.

No.
At the end of the event, we'll have a small celebration where everyone can showcase their game, and we all get to play each other's creations. You'll also be able to vote for your favourites in a few different categories, after which we'll announce some winners based on the votes.

That said, it's all very casual and not competitive. The goal is to celebrate what everyone made, not to compete or win.

Yes!
Feel free to invite friends and family to join us on Sunday, 1 February at 17:00 for the presentation of all creations.
